India's trusted business calling framework is expanding. After the implementation of the 1600 number series for BFSI and Government service and transactional calls, TRAI has introduced the 1601 number series for eligible entities in other sectors.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued its direction for the allocation and operationalization of the 1601 numbering series on 10 August 2026. The objective is to create a recognizable identity for legitimate service and transactional calls while helping consumers distinguish genuine communications from spam, spoofing and fraudulent calls.
As a VNO (Virtual Network Operator) licensed CPaaS provider, Go2Market is eligible to provide the 1601 number series, subject to partnering with the underlying Telecom Service Provider (TSP) and complying with applicable TRAI and DoT directives.
Read this detailed blog to understand 1601 number series compliance and procurement process.
The introduction of 1601 also makes an important distinction that businesses and consumers need to understand.
1600 Series
1601 Series
This means businesses should understand that the 1600 series is exclusively for BFSI and regulated entities.
Go2Market already provides 1600 number series and a complete communication solution for BFSI organizations, including TRAI-compliant voice, DLT-compliant SMS Service, 140 Series promotional calling, IVR and Cloud Call Center solutions.
The first phase of the 1601 rollout focuses on sectors where customers regularly receive important service-related calls.
Essential Utilities
Electricity, water, city gas and LPG distribution companies can use the 1601 numbers for legitimate customer service and transactional communication.
Examples include:
Logistics and Courier Services
Delivery and logistics companies can use 1601 numbers for communications such as:
The underlying principle is simple, 1601 is for transactional and service communication, not marketing.
Promotional Calls Are Not Permitted
The 1601 series is not a replacement for promotional voice communication via 140 series. Marketing, sales, promotional offers or unsolicited commercial calling (UCC) cannot be mixed into service or transactional calls.
This separation helps create transparency, customers can better understand the nature of a call based on its numbering identity.
Direct Allocation Strengthens Accountability
Another important feature is that 1601 numbers are intended to be allocated directly to verified Principal Entities (PEs) through telecom operators, strengthening the linkage between the calling number and the actual business using it.
The introduction of the 1601 series is another important step toward a more structured and trusted voice communication ecosystem in India. While 1600 serves eligible BFSI and Government service and transactional calls, the 1601 series extends this trusted calling framework to other eligible entities.

1. Is the 1601 series fully implemented across all industries?
No. The current framework represents Phase-I implementation of the 1601 numbering series. The initial sectors covered are essential utility providers such as electricity, water and LPG distribution, along with logistics and courier services.
2. Can businesses use 1601 numbers for promotional or marketing calls?
No. The 1601 series is intended for service and transactional voice calls. Promotional, marketing, or unsolicited commercial calls are not permitted under this numbering framework. Businesses should use the appropriate framework i.e. 140 series for promotional calls.
3. Can the 1601 rules or eligible sectors change in the future?
Yes. Since the current framework is based on Phase-I implementation, TRAI and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) may issue further directions, clarify eligibility, expand the covered sectors, or modify operational requirements. Businesses should therefore refer to the latest TRAI guidelines before implementing 1601-based calling.
